Whilst fresh flowers perform in a very different way to faux they follow an ancient tradition. Bridal flowers were in the form of garlands were worn around the necks of Romans they thought they signified new beginnings and the hope of fertility. In Elizabethan times they used herbs and spices that had a strong smell like garlic and rosemary which helped to ward off the strong body odours. They believed they would keep away evil spirits and bad luck.
Queen Victoria when marrying Albert carried flowers in the hand which was similar to what we see today. Although her interpretation was called a tussel mussel, made in the shape of a round posy from flowers gathered from the garden which included orange blossom, myrtle, moss and edged with lace. This bouquet went on to be called a Victorian posy.
